Materials:1 ball Aunt Lydia's fashion crochet thread, size 3 (100 percent mercerized cotton, 150 yards per ball) in the color of choice
crochet hook, US size E/3.50 mm
2 tubes size-6 beads, color #1 (silver/clear) (approximately 175 beads)
beading needle with large eye
tapestry needle
1. Using a beading needle, prestring 175 beads onto the thread. Push them far down on the thread so they are out of the way while you're crocheting the bottom of the box. The beading will start up the sides of the box.
2. Attach the thread to the hook with a slipknot. Ch 5 and join to first ch with a sl st to form a ring.
Tip: When working in rounds, the right side is always facing you. Do not turn the work at the end of the round. The beads show on the "wrong" side, which in this case will be the outside of the box.
Round 1: Ch 1 and work 10 sc in the center of ring. Place a marker.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st until reaching the end of the round (20 st). Now move the marker to the last st completed (continue moving the marker in this fashion at the completion of each subsequent round).
Round 3: 1 sc in next st and then 2 sc in next st. Repeat this process until reaching the end of the round (30 st).
Round 4: 1 sc in each st to end of the round (30 st).
Round 5: 1 sc in next st and then 2 sc in next st. Repeat this process until reaching the end of the round (45 st).
Round 6: 1 sc in each st to end of round (45 st).
Round 7: 1 sc in next st and then 2 sc in next st. Repeat this process until reaching the last 3 st. Now work 1 sc in each of those last 3 st (66 st).
Round 8: 1 sc in each st to the end of round (66 st).
Round 9: (1 sc in each of the next 4 sc, work 2 sc together), repeat to end of round (55 sc) (figure A).Rounds 10-17 (beading): 1 beaded sc in first sc from previous round (3 sc, 1 beaded sc); repeat until returning to beg of round. Do not join; continue in spiral fashion until sides are desired height. Beads should begin to form a diagonal pattern.
Round 18: To close off the spiral and complete the rim of the box, sl st in first st from previous round below. Work 1 beaded chain. Work 1 beaded sc in each sc around, lining the beads up evenly. When you get all the way around, sl st into base of beaded chain and fasten off.
Finishing:
If there is a sp where the thread shows through at the last st, sew a bead into position using another piece of thread and a tapestry needle. Weave in the ends.
