    Figure A

Dan Murphy, formerly of Prym Dritz, adds a little color to wicker baskets with DylonB. Craft Dye.

    Materials:

    Dylon Craft Dye
    Salt
    Hot water
    Measuring cup
    Measuring spoons
Large pot deep enough to submerge basket
    Wicker basket
    Rubber gloves
    Mixing spoon
    Paper towels

    1. Mix Dylon Craft Dye according to package directions. Mix the entire package of dye with 4 tablespoons of salt and add about 2 cups of hot water to dissolve the powder. Add the dye mixture to the water in a large deep pot that is simmering over heat.

    2. Using rubber gloves, submerge the wicker basket in the simmering dye mixture. Hold the basket by the handle so it won't float. Since it is lightweight, it will tend to float to the surface (figure A). Keep checking the intensity of the color, and remove the basket when the desired color is reached. Turn the basket over and submerge the handle, holding the basket by the bottom.

    3. Place the basket on paper towels to dry.

    Other suggestions

The dye may be used on silk shoes too. Rather than dip the shoe in the dye, apply dye to the silk with a toothbrush.

To dye a feather boa, moisten the feathers first, then dip the boa into the dye mixture.

Natural and synthetic fibers, as well as wood, can be dyed with Dylon Craft Dye.

To dye grass for an Easter basket, moisten the dried grass, then dip into the dye mixture.

The dye will not stain the pot.
